3-Line Tales: Threatened

“There’s an accident down the road!” The farm resort’s gardener announced huffing and puffing as he burst in the barn. “A car is on fire; the driver, too!”

Leo’s heart skipped. She is arriving today, at about this time! He threw down the water bucket he was holding and ran outside. He could see smoke and hear sirens at the turn towards town.

Oh, God, let her be safe. He prayed running to the scene. Let her be safe. He kept praying, squeezing in among the crowd gathered outside the first responder’s barricade. A body lay covered in the middle of the road, long blond hair peeking out of the cover. Oh, no…no…no…
