Free Friday: Fort Matanzas National Monument, Florida

Fort Matanzas

Located in St John’s County, Florida stands a small fort called Fort Matanzas.

It was built in the 1700’s to guard the back door to the city of Saint Augustine where the city’s major defense system, Castillo San Marcos, is located.

Today, Fort Matanzas is under the care of the National Park Service. Visitors are brought to the fort by boat.

A ranger gives a short informational talk about the fort and gives visitors the chance to explore.

It’s a monument worth visiting; and the cherry on top, the whole tour is free!
