Bacalhau, dried and salted cod, is a Portuguese staple. It is usually served on social occasions and at traditional Christmas Eve dinners.
Most of the time, bacalhau is served with potatoes. On our last night in Portugal, we had dinner at a restaurant that specializes only in serving bacalhau. Before the bacalhau arrived, I stuffed myself with the numerous appetizers, so I had little room left for the well presented cod dish. Caetano, the tour manager, was disappointed at my half-eaten plate. I assured him it wasn’t the dish. It was my full belly that’s to blame.Tasty Tuesday: Bacalhau

I have only seen the rehydrated fish — it look slimey and soft. But I suppose prepared correctly, i could be great. On the other hand, I told myself, Scandinavians eat lutefish — back and forth go my tastebuds as they imagine it. I gather you liked it; maybe that will stop my tastebud’s imaginary debate.

I only saw them served nicely on a plate. They tasted good. I love fish, so I didn’t have any issues. It’s an acquired taste, I think. Some people did not like them.
