The Ruins of Ancient Capernaum

The village of Capernaum is mentioned multiple times in the Bible. It was a fishing village in the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. Its ruins was discovered in 1838.

Excavations in 1905 revealed the remains of a synagogue and an octagonal church.

In 1968, excavation of the western portion led to the discovery of a house. It is believed that the house is that of Peter.

It is a simple house with coarse walls and a roof made of earth and straw. He shared the house with his friend, Jesus. Today, a modern Memorial stands over the house.

The Memorial can be seen through the window above.

Ancient ruins are fascinating. As always, I was amazed by the engineering genius and artistry of the people who built Capernaum.

I am glad the site was in our itinerary.

    Thanks. would love to see it too! I wonder how they decided it was Peter’s house they uncovered?
